24 and diminishing self-esteem

Postby Slimprawn » Mon Oct 06, 2008 2:28 am

Hi

I'm new to this forum and have only decided recently that I must take action against my hair loss. Having scanned through photos of my youth, it is apparent that my hair line isn't what it once was. I have always had relatively fine hair which doesn't help matters. My knowledge on hairloss is limited as I have only just broached the subject, therefore need to do more research and speak to others in a similar position. My loss appears to be around the temple area mainly, and photos of old show that I once had a decent hair line in the temple region.

I find myself shying away from activities that prevent me masking my hair line with a hat of some description. This is having a knock on effect in various aspects of my life and I just feel that I need to take the bull by the horns and take action. Some may think this is pure vanity but if you don't feel happy with your own appearance then it simply hinders you, and I dont want to have restrictions on my life any longer. I used to enjoy going out drinking with my friends and family but no longer feel comfortable enough to do so. These restrictions spread to areas like holidays, meals and swimming.

What should be my first port of call? Should I consult a specialist to discuss my follicular issues?
I have read so many varying views on the drugs and medicines available to prevent or dramatically slow down the rate of hair loss, do different combinations work for different people or is there a universal combination that seems to work for the vast majority?

I have so many unanswered questions and would be very grateful if you guys could give me some guidance/info, and impart the experiences you've had and knowledge you've furthered

Many thanks

Slim

Hi Slim,

I'm in pretty much the same boat as you, although a couple of years older. I've just started doing something positive about mine in terms of stopping it, but my first port of call was actually concealment products, particularly if you're suffering from self esteem issues.

There are a lot of options out there, I would recommend staying away from sprays as they look terrible, and creams like Couvre which look ok, but are SO messy to apply. I personally love DermMatch, it goes on without a mess, and stays on well. It does make my hair a bit dull looking and chalky though, but as an improvement in a few minutes it can't be beat in my opinion.

As for treatments, I've just started taking Propecia, terrified of side-effects but I feel it has to be done, that or Minoxidil. There are a lot of re-growth products on the market too, but as far as I can see most of them are crap, taking a vitamin or using a shampoo that hasn't been tested extensively or FDA approved can't really do much good to your hair, and certainly not to your wallet.
